A.                     Issue

Parking turn-over at 2245 N. 122nd Street is insufficient.

B.                     Background/Options

On September 12th, the Transportation Affairs Committee approved a 90-day trial to eliminate parking restrictions on the west side of 122nd Street from the alley south of North Avenue to Garfield Avenue, and on the east side of 122nd Street from 100-feet south of North Avenue to Garfield Avenue.  The trial officially began when signs were removed on September 15th.

The resident at 2245 N. 122nd Street requires parking to turn-over quickly in order to accommodate the use of an accessible van. Employees and visitors of nearby businesses are parking for extended periods of time in front of the residence at 2245 N. 122nd Street during business hours, creating an accessibility issue for the resident.

Staff has communicated with the property owner at 2245 N. 122nd Street and proposes the following.

Modify the ongoing 90-day trial to include a 15-minute parking zone on the west side of 122nd Street from the alley south of North Avenue to 47-feet south of said alley.

With the modification, the 90-day trial to eliminate parking restrictions on the west side of 122nd Street from 47-feet south of the alley south of North Avenue to Garfield Avenue, and on the east side of 122nd Street from 100-feet south of North Avenue to Garfield Avenue, will continue.

Staff will continue to observe parking during the trial period. Should the trial inadequately address concerns for on-street parking, staff will return to the Transportation Affairs Committee to modify the trial.

C.                     Strategic Plan (Area of Focus)

Priority 2: Public Safety, Goal 2 - Proactively address pedestrian, bicycle, and vehicular safety.

D.                     Fiscal Impact

Minor expenses for in-house placement of temporary signs where applicable. Existing sign budget will accommodate these expenses.

E.                     Recommendation

Direct staff to modify the 90-day trial to eliminate parking restrictions on the west side of 122nd Street from the alley south of North Avenue to Garfield Avenue, and on the east side of 122nd Street from 100-feet south of North Avenue to Garfield Avenue, to include a 15-minute parking zone on the west side of 122nd Street from the alley south of North Avenue to 47-feet south of said alley.
