A. Issue
Adequate lines of sight are blocked on North Avenue due to parked vehicles.
B. Background/Options
Stopping sight distance is the distance required by motorist on a street to sufficiently notice a hazard, react by applying the brake, and come to a full stop before the striking a hazard.
Engineering is recommending prohibiting parking at corners along North Avenue from Wauwatosa Avenue to 60th Street in a manner that motorists on North Avenue have sufficient distance to see a motorist leaving the side streets and brake to avoid a collision. These prohibitions also provide improved lines of sight between those waiting on side streets to find gaps in traffic on North Avenue, and - more importantly - open up lines of sight for improved vehicle-pedestrian, vehicle-bicycle, and bicycle-pedestrian visibility.
The following outlines the proposed 90-day parking prohibitions:
• North side of North Avenue
o From 42-feet west of 74th Street to 57-feet east of 74th Street
o From 47-feet west of Lefeber Avenue to 59-feet east of Lefeber Avenue
o From 52-feet west of 72nd Street to 72nd Street
o From 39-feet west of 71st Street to 55-feet east of 71st Street
o From 44-feet west of 70th Street to 61-feet east of 70th Street
o From 44-feet west of 69th Street to 69th Street
o From 42-feet west of 67th Street to 56-feet east of 67th Street
o From 52-feet west of 66th Street to 66th Street
o From 43-feet west of 65th Street to 57-feet east of 65th Street
o From 55-feet west of 64th Street to 64th Street
o From 47-feet west of 63rd Street to 59-feet east of 63rd Street
o From 44-feet west of 62nd Street to 55-feet east of 62nd Street
