Review and consideration of approval of the 2027 Common Council meeting calendar

A. Issue
Pursuant to Sec. 2.02.070 of the Municipal Code, the proposed 2027 Common Council and Council Committee meeting calendar is presented to the Government Affairs Committee for review, consideration, and recommendation to the full Common Council.
B. Key issues for Consideration
The 2027 calendar continues the meeting structure approved for 2026. The calendar maintains a consistent and predictable schedule to support both operational workflows and effective legislative processes. Key elements include:
- One regular Common Council meeting each month on the fourth Tuesday, with adjustments in November and December for holiday schedules
- One standing Committee meeting night each month on the third Tuesday
- Annual Report Committee Meetings scheduled for March 9 and September 14
o Various volunteer committees (e.g., Sustainability Committee, Commission for Persons with Disabilities, Historic Preservation Commission, etc.) deliver annual reports to Council committees throughout the year. The Council could schedule two dedicated committee nights - one in the spring and one in the fall - for these reports. Committees and commissions would pick one of these dates, and all four Council committees would meet to hear the reports.
- A Common Council meeting will also be held on November 9 to conduct the required public hearing for the annual budget
- Additional Financial Affairs Committee meetings in the fall to accommodate operating and capital budget presentations, public input, and deliberation prior to adoption.
This calendar model has proven effective and efficient for both staff and elected officials and continues to align with organizational needs.
C. Recommendation
I recommend that the Committee review and discuss the proposed 2027 Common Council meeting calendar, which continues the model used in prior years, and make a recommendation to the full Common Council for approval of the final 2027 meeting calendar.
