Operational Updates
A. Harm reduction initiative impacts
• Hot Spot Directed Patrol Measure (this DPM is new) and crash data response (ongoing)
• DPM: Studies in large agencies have shown that random 15-minute patrols each day lower harm in large cities
• Attempt was to see if it worked at smaller, “first suburban ring” cities like Wauwatosa
• February to July 2024, random 15-minute visibility patrols at 4 predetermined locations were conducted, and data review showed that harm was reduced at those 4 locations (Mayfair/North, 68th/North, Mayfair/Burleigh, 68th/State)
• It worked, causing a 22% reduction in harm
o Injury crashes down 13% YTD
o Burglaries down 10%YTD
o Motor Vehicle theft down 20%
o Self-initiated field activity (SIFA) is around 44% of all call = active Officers with more available time
B. Staffing update
• As of 11/14/2024, 12 vacancies
• Vacancies shared among the following:
o Supervision (1), SRO (1), HIDTA TFO (1), Detectives (2), Patrol Officers (7)
• As of 1/1/25, lowering authorized strength by 4: 3 for WPOA contract, 1 from losing a COPS grant - will reapply for the COPS grant in 2026
• Several lateral processes, goal of 5 new officers led to 0 hires
• 2 new hires are training in academy, graduate in December
• 1 will go to academy in January, up to 4 more possible to attend also, but dependent on outcome of background investigations
• 1 is active field training at the PD
• 9 completed active field training and are in their probationary year
o 1 probationary officer was extended for additional training
• City approved CSP hiring from 5 to 8
