A.                     Issue

Consideration of request for a variance from City Code Section 8.44.090 for a driveway approach width greater than 30 feet at Fire Station 53 off of W Innovation Drive.

B.                     Background/Options

The Engineering Department is in design of a pavement replacement project at Fire Station 53 located at 10525 W Watertown Plank Rd. The existing driveway approach off of W Innovation Drive is approximately 30 feet wide at the curb opening and there is consistent wear along the northern curb line at the approach. Therefore, a turning movement analysis was run using the dimensions of the Fire Department’s ladder truck, and it was determined that a 38-foot-wide driveway approach is needed.

City Code Section 8.44.090 requires that driveway approaches shall not exceed 30 feet in width at the curb opening. Therefore, Engineering is requesting a variance from City Code Section 8.44.090 for this wider than standard driveway approach.

C.                     Strategic Plan (Area of Focus)

Priority Area 3: Infrastructure

D.                     Fiscal Impact

This project is included in the approved 2026-2030 Capital Budget.

E.                     Recommendation

Staff recommends approval of the request for a variance to City Code Section 8.44.090.
