Issue
Poor line of sight at Harwood Avenue & Dewey Avenue intersection.

Background/Options
Parking is currently prohibited on the north side of Harwood Avenue from Harmonee Avenue to Dewey Avenue. On the south side of Harwood Avenue, parking is prohibited from Harmonee Avenue to 95-feet west of Dewey Avenue. East of this point exists 3-hour parking from 9:00am to 6:00pm, except Saturday Sunday and legal holidays.

Representatives of St. John’s Lutheran School and the Aurora Psychiatric Hospital have expressed concerns with the safety of road users – especially during drop-off/pick-up and employee release. The concerns extend to those dropping-off/picking-up children immediately east of the Harwood Avenue & Harmonee Avenue signalized intersection, as well as to those leaving Dewey Avenue who cannot see around parked vehicles.

In addition to the above concerns, the City is planning for the future reconstruction of the Harwood Avenue & Harmonee Avenue signalized intersection. The design plans will require eliminating parking on the south side of Harwood from Harmonee Avenue to Dewey Avenue to fit a small median in the street, which is planned to be constructed in an effort to reduce angle and sideswipe crashes that occur in the signalized intersection.

To address the aforementioned items, staff recommends 90-day trial of parking prohibitions any time on the south side of Harwood Avenue from 95-feet west of Dewey Avenue to 55-feet east of Dewey Avenue.
